We first met Kieu on a busy street in Danang City. She was having a seizure. This was a familiar event for Kieu. She had ten or fifteen seizures a day since she came down with malaria three years before. After surviving the high fever, her seizures began. We thought that she was about eight years old. We were wrong. She was a teenager. Children in her neighborhood were afraid of Kieu. They called her "mad." They wouldn't play with her. They wouldn't have anything to do with her. |

We arranged for Kieu's medical care, medicines, testing, and special schooling. We helped her family to get housing and provided school for her brother. We gave school supplies and assistance to the school she grew to love. Kieu gained weight. She learned to read and write. She is now free of seizures. Kieu is happy and self-assured. People used to shun Kieu. Now she is a popular young teenager. Her family has a home that they love. She and her family have a future - a future where once they had no hope and only tears. They smile. |
